Argentine stud farm Haras La Magdalena has added Chullo (Arg), a five-time Group 1 winner in Argentina who was named that country's Horse of the Year in 1997, to its 2006 stallion roster after recently purchasing the son of Equalize from Applebite Farms in a private transaction brokered by agents Luis and Hernan Bouza.
A 12-year-old horse out of 1997 Argentine Broodmare of the Year Que Ilusion, by Cipayo, Chullo entered stud in 2001 at Applebite Farms near French Camp, California, where he currently stands for $3,000.
From three crops of racing age, Chullo has sired four winners from 12 starters. His top progeny include Chulla Isabella, third in the 2005 California Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Stakes at Del Mar. Through June 5, Chullo has lifetime progeny earnings of $256,255.
Chullo also earned champion honors as three-year-old colt, older horse, and stayer in Argentina after he won five Group 1 races in 1997.
Sent to the United States late in 1998 after exiting an unplaced finish earlier that year in the Gran Premio Asociacion Latinoamericana de Jockey Clubs (Arg-G1) with a front suspensory ligament injury, he finished second by a half-length to Commitisize in the 2000 Arcadia Handicap (G3) at Santa Anita Park. He won six of 11 starts and earned $556,139 in four seasons.
